Purpose
Paxton's foundational meditation. Introduces the whole form's premise — that dance is a negotiation with gravity — before anyone touches. Settles the nervous system and lands people in their bodies.
Setup
Everyone stands, feet hip-width, eyes soft or closed, spread around the room. Quiet or ambient music, or silence.
Play
- "Stand as simply as you can. Let your arms hang."
- "Do nothing on purpose. Just notice: your body is not actually still. It's making tiny constant adjustments to keep you upright."
- "Feel the sway. The micro-corrections in your ankles, your spine. That's the small dance. It's happening without you."
- Let it run in silence for 2–3 minutes. "You're not doing it. You're watching it be done."
- Slowly invite eyes open, staying with the sensation.
Cues
"Nothing to achieve." · "Let gravity find you." · "Notice, don't correct."
Variations
- Easier: hand on a wall for the anxious.
- Harder: introduce the idea that all CI is this negotiation, scaled up.
Debrief
"What did you notice was moving that you thought was still?"
Watch For
Standing eyes-closed can make some people dizzy; offer the wall. This is also your first read of who's comfortable and who's guarded.
