Purpose

Introduces getting onto a partner's supportive surface (the "table" — a hands-and-knees back) and traveling across it. First taste of being supported off the floor, safely and low.

Setup

Pairs. One makes a stable "table": hands-and-knees, strong flat back, head neutral.

Play

  1. "Table: make a strong, stable surface. Do not move unless you choose to — you're the ground now."
  2. "Surfer: explore the table with your weight. Drape your back over it. Roll across it slowly. Let it support part of your weight."
  3. "Table: you can slowly move — travel forward, sink toward the floor — offering the surfer new terrain."
  4. Switch roles. Then explore transitions between the two.

Cues

"Table: strong and honest." · "Surfer: distribute your weight, don't point-load." · "Roll across, don't clamber."

Variations

  • Easier: surfer only leans across; no full weight.
  • Harder: surfer rolls fully across the table's back and off the other side into the floor (rehearse the landing/roll first).

Debrief

"As the table, what told you the surfer trusted you? As the surfer, when did you commit your weight?"

Watch For

Never put weight on the spine's small of the back or the neck — weight rides over the strong ribcage/pelvis area of the table. Table protects their own neck and lower back. Keep everything low and rollable.
