Purpose
Develops true counterbalance in motion — two bodies leaning into and hanging off each other's weight, moving through space as a mutually dependent structure. The doorway to weight-taking.
Setup
Pairs. Warm bodies (do after warm-up). Mid music.
Play
- Recap the A-frame from The Leaning Tower (#9).
- "Now keep that mutual weight, but move — travel across the floor, spiral down toward the ground and back up, circle each other, always counterbalanced."
- "Explore giving more weight — the point where if your partner stepped away, you'd fall. Trust that they won't."
- "Find sitting, hanging, and suspended shapes where you rely completely on each other's counter-weight."
Cues
"Equal and opposite, in motion." · "Commit your weight — half-commitment is what's unstable." · "Feel their center, not just their hands."
Variations
- Easier: keep it grip-based and slow.
- Harder: counterbalance down to the floor and back up in one continuous phrase; migrate the contact from hands to backs mid-lean.
Debrief
"Counterbalance only works if you commit your weight. Where did you hold back, and what happened?"
Watch For
Grip security; gradual weight changes; feet ready to recover. The classic injury is a sudden release — drill gradual release.
