Purpose
Trains the willingness to leave stable uprightness — to go off-balance on purpose and trust the partner and the floor to catch the fall. The psychological gateway to advanced CI.
Setup
Experienced pairs, fully warm. Soft floor. Rolling rehearsed.
Play
- Recap safe rolling and falling solo. "You already know how to meet the floor."
- "In a duet, start letting yourself go past your balance point — tip off the vertical — knowing you can roll out of it or your partner's weight can redirect it."
- "Use your partner's counter-weight to go further off balance than you could alone, then recover or roll."
- "Play at the edge: the thrilling moment of falling, redirected into the dance."
Cues
"Fall into the dance, not away from it." · "The floor is still your friend." · "Redirect, don't resist."
Variations
- Easier: small tips with quick recovery.
- Harder: sustained off-balance passes; falls that become rolls that become the next lift-off.
Debrief
"What's the story your body tells when it goes off balance — fear or thrill? Did that change over the game?"
Watch For
Only for groups who can roll reflexively. Clear floor, big margins. Any dancer can decline any off-balance moment. This is where the form gets genuinely risky — earn it.
