Purpose
The traditional culminating form of a CI gathering: an open, self-organizing jam with a witnessing container. Integrates everything — duets form and dissolve, dancers enter and exit, the group breathes as one. This is CI in its native, artful state.
Setup
The whole group. A defined dance space with a clear "edge" where dancers can sit, rest, and witness. Full playlist. Consent tools already alive.
Play
- "This is an open jam. Dance with whoever, whenever — duets, trios, solos. Enter when you're called, rest at the edge when you're not."
- "The edge is part of the dance — witnessing is participating. Rest is honored, not lazy."
- "Enter a dance by offering contact; leave one with the exit bow. Let the whole room's weather guide you."
- Facilitator holds time and space, tends the edges, and dances only to seed or rescue.
Cues
"Witnessing is dancing." · "Enter and exit cleanly." · "Feel the whole room, not just your dance." · "Stillness is always complete."
Variations
- Easier: time-boxed rounds; suggest configurations ("find a new partner").
- Harder / freer: fully open, facilitator nearly silent — the group self-governs.
Debrief
Circle up after. "What did the room's weather do over the jam? When did you dance, and when did you rest — and could you honor both?"
Watch For
In a free jam, mixed fluency means mixed risk — keep an eye on beginner/advanced pairings and on anyone consistently left at the edge. Protect the exit culture. This is where you host, mostly silent, always watching.
