Purpose
An entire duet danced low — on and near the floor — where bodies roll through, under, and around each other continuously. Delivers rich, complex contact with almost none of the height risk, which makes it ideal for building fluency (and perfect on a foam floor).
Setup
Pairs. Cushioned floor preferred. Warm.
Play
- "Stay below kneeling height for this whole dance — the ceiling is low."
- "Find a rolling point of contact on the ground and let it lead you through, under, and around each other — sliding, spiraling, weaving on the floor."
- "Share weight freely — down here, if you lose balance you're already home."
- Let it be a continuous, unhurried floor duet.
Cues
"Keep the ceiling low." · "Roll through, not over." · "The floor is the third dancer."
Variations
- Easier: slow, minimal weight; lots of space.
- Harder: add brief rises to kneeling and back; eyes closed passages.
Debrief
"What became possible staying low that feels risky standing? How did the floor help?"
Watch For
Pinned limbs and hair; keep weight off the spine and neck; communicate before rolling onto a partner. Low and slow.
