Purpose

Ensemble attunement with little or no contact: the group moves as a flock — a murmuration — following whoever is momentarily at the "front," leadership passing silently as the flock turns. The gentlest on-ramp to group sensing.

Setup

The group in a loose clump, all roughly facing one direction. Open space.

Play

  1. "Move together as a flock, all following the person currently at the front, matching their movement."
  2. "When the flock turns, whoever is now at the front becomes the leader — no words, no appointing. Leadership just shifts with the facing."
  3. "Stay close, move as one body, keep it slow enough that the whole flock can follow."

Cues

"One flock, one movement." · "Leadership shifts with the turn." · "Feel the whole, not just the front."

Variations

  • Easier: very slow, simple movements, tight clump.
  • Harder: add levels, travel, and speed changes; let sub-flocks split and merge.

Debrief

"Could you feel leadership pass without anyone deciding? When did the flock move as one?"

Watch For

Collisions when it speeds up — keep it slow and spatially aware. Everyone shares responsibility for not steering the flock into walls.
