Purpose

Locates the body's low center — the hara in Japanese practice, the lower dantian in Chinese, roughly three finger-widths below the navel — and teaches breathing and moving from it. It sits close to the body's actual center of mass (which is nearer the sacrum), which is why organizing movement around it works mechanically as well as poetically. A centered dancer is stable, unhurried, and moves whole; an uncentered one moves from the head and limbs. This is the felt anchor of "moving from center."

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, knees soft. Optionally rest both palms over the lower belly.

Play

  1. "Bring your attention low — below the navel, deep in the belly. This is your center, your center of gravity, the place all balanced movement organizes around."
  2. "Breathe into it — let each inhale fill and expand the low belly under your hands, each exhale settle you there."
  3. "Now move a little — sway, turn, take a step — and initiate every movement from this center. The limbs follow the center, not the other way around."
  4. "Walk slowly around the room, leading from the belly, the rest of you along for the ride."

Cues

"Attention low and heavy." · "Breathe into the center." · "The center moves first; the body follows."

Variations

  • Easier: just stand, hands on belly, breathing into center.
  • Deeper: combine with Cloud Hands (S6) or Standing Like a Tree (S4) — center as the source of both.

Debrief

"What changes when movement starts from your center instead of your head or hands?"

Watch For

Cerebral folks will 'think about' the center rather than feel it — invite them to let the hands and breath do the locating, not the mind.

Bridges To

Cloud Hands (S6), The Counterbalance (#13), Momentum Studies (#19) — all center-led work.
