Purpose
A fast, reliable tension-release: the audible sigh dumps held stress and physically drops the body's weight toward the ground — a direct rehearsal of giving weight.
Setup
Standing or seated.
Play
- "Take a full breath in, then let it out through the mouth with an audible sigh — haaah — and let your whole body soften downward as you do."
- "Let the shoulders drop, the jaw release, the knees soften. Sigh the tension out toward the floor."
- Repeat 5–8 times. "Each sigh, give a little more of your weight to the earth."
Cues
"Audible — let it be heard." · "Soften downward on the out-breath." · "Give the tension to the floor."
Variations
- Easier: silent long exhale for the self-conscious.
- Deeper: the "double inhale" physiological sigh — two sips in, one long sigh out. In a randomised trial, five minutes a day of this pattern for a month improved mood and lowered anxiety more than an equal dose of mindfulness meditation, though it did not clearly beat the other breathing patterns tested, and it hasn't been studied as a one-off. Treat it as a good option, not a stronger one.
Debrief
brief: "What dropped?"
Watch For
Encourage sound — the vocal release is much of the effect, and it also warms up a room's willingness to be heard (great before consent/voice work).
