Purpose
Lets breath begin to move the body, dissolving the line between stillness and dance. Builds the sense that movement can arise on its own — the improviser's core trust — while warming the spine gently.
Setup
Standing, feet hip-width, knees soft, eyes soft.
Play
- "Let your breath begin to move you — the tiniest sway, growing from the breath rather than from 'deciding' to move."
- "Inhale might lift and open you; exhale might fold and lower you. Let the breath choose."
- "Let it grow into a slow, spontaneous swaying — spine, arms, weight shifting — always breath-led."
Cues
"Let the breath dance you." · "Don't decide — allow." · "Follow, don't drive."
Variations
- Easier: keep it to a small standing sway.
- Deeper: let it travel — the sway becomes slow walking, spiraling, floor-ward.
Debrief
"Could you let movement happen to you? What did that feel like?"
Watch For
Eyes-closed swaying can unbalance; offer eyes open or a wide stance.
