Purpose

The classic qigong rooting posture. Builds a grounded, weighted, structurally-aligned stance — the physical and mental foundation of every counterbalance and every stable base in CI. Teaches "rootedness" you can literally feel.

Setup

Standing, feet shoulder-width, knees slightly bent, arms rounded as if holding a large ball at chest height. Eyes soft.

Play

  1. "Sink your weight down through your feet into the earth, as if roots grew from your soles. Crown of the head floats up. Long spine between."
  2. "Soften everywhere you can while keeping the shape — shoulders, belly, jaw. Hold yourself up with structure, not tension."
  3. "Feel heavy below, light above. Just stand, and breathe, and root."
  4. Hold 3–6 minutes (it will feel long — that's the training).

Cues

"Rooted below, floating above." · "Structure, not strain." · "Sink the weight, lengthen the spine."

Variations

  • Easier: shorter holds; arms resting at sides.
  • Deeper: longer holds; explore how little muscular effort holds the shape.

Debrief

"What does 'rooted' feel like in your body? Where were you holding tension you didn't need?"

Watch For

Knees track over toes, never collapsing inward; don't lock them. Legs may shake — that's normal; rest if it's too much.

Bridges To

Back-to-Back Rise (#8), The Leaning Tower (#9), The Counterbalance (#13) — everything grounded.
