Purpose

Spontaneous shaking (a qigong / tension-release practice) that warms the whole body, releases held stress, and — invaluably — dissolves self-consciousness. One of the best icebreakers in the book: it's impossible to stay stiff and guarded while gently shaking.

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, knees soft. Upbeat but not frantic music helps.

Play

  1. "Start a gentle bounce in the knees, letting the heels stay heavy. Let the bounce travel up through the whole body."
  2. "Now shake — hands, arms, shoulders, spine, everything. Let it be loose, sloppy, undignified. Shake the tension out."
  3. "Shake anywhere that feels tight. Let sound come if it wants."
  4. To finish: "Slowly let the shaking subside… and stand still. Feel the buzz and aliveness."

Cues

"Loose and sloppy — no style points." · "Shake out the day." · "Let it be silly."

Variations

  • Easier: just bounce in the knees.
  • Deeper: longer, wilder, with vocal release.

Debrief

"How does the body feel now? Notice the aliveness after stopping." (The still-after-shaking state is a beautiful lead-in to the small dance.)

Watch For

Keep it gentle on the neck and joints — loose shaking, not whipping. Anyone with vertigo or joint issues goes small.

Bridges To

Everything — it's a universal warm-up and un-sticker. Especially good before first partner contact.
