Purpose

Trains the fine attention qigong calls listening — the ability to notice very small changes at the edge of the body, which is precisely the attunement a CI dancer uses to feel a partner's weight and intention. The solo-to-partner bridge into listening.

Setup

Standing, relaxed. Later, pairs.

Play

  1. Solo: "Hold your palms facing each other, a foot apart, as if cupping a ball of warm air. Slowly draw them closer and apart. Can you feel a subtle spring, warmth, or pressure between them?"
  2. "Play with that felt sense — compress the 'ball,' expand it, move it slowly through space."
  3. Partner: "Face a partner, palms toward theirs without touching, ~15 cm apart. Sense each other. Now move — one leads, then neither — staying attuned across the gap." (This is the qigong root of The Mirror Hand.)

Cues

"Notice whatever's actually there — including nothing." · "Let the hands listen." · "Attune across the space."

Variations

  • Easier: solo only.
  • Deeper: partner version with eyes closed part of the time.

Debrief

"Did you feel anything between the hands? What was it like to attune before touching?"

Watch For

Some feel a lot, some feel nothing — both are fine, and neither is better. When people report warmth, springiness, or pressure, that is real sensation: skin temperature, moving air, and the feedback from very slow movement. What careful blinded studies have not found is any ability to detect an external "energy field" better than chance — and nothing here depends on that. What we're training is attention, not a belief. Keep it curious and non-dogmatic; if the language of "energy" helps someone attend more finely, that's fine too, as long as nobody is asked to believe anything.
